Missoula Earns 100 on Municipal Equality Index

MISSOULA -

Missoula earns a perfect score of 100 on a national equality index.

Members of the Human Rights Campaign rank cities based on their non-discrimination laws, relationship recognition and how well the city treats its own LGBT employees.

This was the first year Missoula was ranked, and the Garden City scored 100 out of 100.

Helena earned a 48, Great Falls scored a 22, and Billings scored a 21.

Caitlin Copple -- an openly gay member of the Missoula City Council -- said a high score signifies a more friendly community and can even boost a city's appeal to outside business.

"I think it says a lot about Missoula, and it says a lot about just how far our world is coming on the issue of LGBT equality, and I think it's awesome we have a city in Montana that got 100%," Copple said.

Copple said now, she's trying to change the city's insurance policy to include transgender health care.
