New Stores Open in Mall During Holiday Shopping Season

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

The holiday shopping season is upon us, and at the Southgate Mall in Missoula, two new stores have opened up, in hopes of jump starting sales with Black Friday deals.

Employees at Simply Mac and Famous Footwear said the right demographics and past success in the Missoula market led to the opening of their mall locations.

Shoppers said it's a sign of a stronger economy and a promising shopping season.

"Things that I would never get any other time, you can get it now," said Janet Thurston, a mall shopper.

Thurston said the holiday shopping season is all about finding great deals -- you just have to be tough enough to navigate the crowds.

She added, "If you like hunting… women like hunting, but this is the kind of hunting you do."

This year, Thurston and other mall shoppers can check a few things off their list at "Simply Mac" -- a store authorized to sell and service Apple products.

"We expect to be pretty busy, we've had a lot of interest from customers walking by and a lot of people asking about when we're going to be open," said Roger Emmer, Director of Services and IT at Simply Mac.

Emmer said they look to expand to communities that don't otherwise have many opportunities to buy Apple products.

He said, "Communities that have a desire and a strong following for Apple and their products and we felt like Missoula was definitely a place that fit that."

Famous Footwear also opened in the mall this morning.

Employees said their Reserve Street store and the one located in Kalispell have been so successful, they were able to open up the mall location this year.

Laraine Moy, the Store Manager, said, "We wanted to hit a different area of Missoula, a different demographic, and we had the need for it."

A women's clothing store called "Bohme" is also set to open on Tuesday, filling Southgate Mall's last lease space.

"It must be a good economy, and it gives us options, more flexibility, and plus, it might save you more money!" added Thurston.

Simply Mac has its grand opening this Friday and Saturday, and Famous Footwear's takes place December 7.

Southgate Mall has opened 15 stores this year.
