Montana Adopts New High School Equivalency Exam

BELGRADE -

Over 3,300 people took the GED test in Montana. Now, the state is switching to a new high school equivalency exam called HiSET.

"It's a good move for our state. It's a good move for those people who may need to take a high school equivalent test," said Denise Juneau, Superintendent of Public Instruction.

The HiSET exam will still test individuals on five sections, reading, writing, math, social studies and science.

"It will be affordable for people to still take the test, still rigorous and it will count as much as the GED does right now," said Juneau. "It will still count for everything a GED currently counts for. It's just a new name and a new group that we are working with."

The GED test costs $120, which is nearly double the cost of HiSET exam.

"The HiSET will be $50 for a student to take and it will allow up to 2 free retakes," said Juneau. "They will also allow people to roll over the GED portions that they may have passed into the new system."

Belgrade Public Schools are on board with issuing the HiSET exam.

"It allows us to keep that connection with students instead of turning them loose and saying good luck to you," said Mark Halgren, Belgrade Schools Curriculum Director.

Halgren said it's not just a test, it's an entire program to help kids graduate.

"We want to catch those kids and give them an alternative to catch up and be able to graduate with their peers," said Halgren.

The last date for GED testing is December 21. Eight other states across the country already adopted the HiSET testing.
