With more than $12,000 in grant money, the Kalispell Police Department hopes to buy three top-of-the-line radios.
The newer radios are smaller, more portable, and have parts that can be replaced.
Police chief, Roger Nasset, says he fears he will not be able to buy replacement parts for the older models within the year.
The money is part of the federal Byrne grant.
Montana was awarded $365,000, and the state distributed that money based on the crime statistics of each region from the last three years.
"If we didn't have this grant opportunity, we'll have to pay for it out of the general fund budget, so it's actually saving local taxpayer's money," said Nasset.
The Kalispell Police Department received money from this grant every year, except one, since 2000.
