Only 212 Montanans Signed Up For Health Coverage In First Month

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

Only 212 Montanans signed up for health insurance under the new Affordable Care Act.

The Department of Health and Human Services said, so far 106,185 people nationwide successfully signed up for coverage.

Since its launch on October 1, healthcare.gov experienced technical issues, making it difficult for people to sign up for health care coverage under the new law.

It's those glitches that are making many people think twice about signing up, including Bozeman resident B.J. Plum.

"I haven't. I knew it was going to be a mess to start with, maybe not a mess, but busy, so I'm waiting until next month," said Plum.

Plum is one of many Americans whose current health insurance premiums will go up because of the Affordable Care Act.

Her friend, Ken Hasting, currently doesn't have health insurance.

He said he created an account before October 1, but wasn't able to use it until just this week.

"When I went in to use it, the system was frozen so I couldn't get in," said Hasting. "So I just tried once a week until I got in. I actually just got in this week and got to the point where I could buy insurance."

Still, Hasting said he is also waiting until next month to actually buy his plan.

Montana Insurance Commissioner Monica Lindeen said more Montanan's should've signed up in the first month.

In a statement to ABC FOX Montana, Lindeen said "I wish these numbers were higher. Like so many Montanans who have attempted to use the federal website, I remain frustrated and disappointed by the performance of healthcare.gov. This is not acceptable."

Hasting said he doesn't think the problem with the affordable care act stops at the technical glitches on the website.

"The website is in fact going to eventually work, but there are some things that I think are problematic about the questionnaire."

The Obama Administration gave HHS a November 30 deadline to get the website working properly.

If you want to sign up for health coverage on the exchange, you have until December 15 to sign up for coverage that will take effect starting January 1.
