Father and Daughter Charged For Big Timber Fatal Hit and Run

A Washington father and daughter are facing charges in connection with the September hit and run.

31-year-old, Wryan Young and her 50-year-old father, Westley Young are both facing a charge of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, as a felony. Wryan is also being charged with an accident involving another person or deceased person, as a felony in Sweet Grass county.

The incident happened near Big Timber and killed an 81-year-old man from Alaska.

It all started around 7 a.m. September 30 near mile marker 376 along Interstate 90. That's when Montana Highway Patrol found Elgie Bedford from Wasilla, Alaska dead in the westbound lanes.

Police said Bedford was struck by oncoming traffic and killed while walking in the westbound lanes of the interstate.

"Mr. Bedford was struck by other vehicles as well," said Bill Bullock, Montana Highway Patrol trooper.

Bullock said Bedford's car was found nearby.

"His vehicle was located eastbound off of the road east of where he was struck and killed," said Bullock.

He said they didn't know why Bedford's car was along the eastbound lanes and he was walking in the westbound.

But, they do know one of Bedford's body parts was found in a Livingston car wash later that morning.

Court documents said Wryan Young, 31, and her 50-year-old father Westley Young were at an Exxon station near the interstate and asked where the closest car wash was after inspecting their Ford pick-up and found material underneath.

The gas station employee informed officials Wryan told her father she thought she ran over some furniture.

MHP was able to track down the Youngs in Oak Harbor, Wash. using surveillance video from the grocery store across the street and police databases.

"The Youngs appeared to have done some things that appeared to have been a little out of the ordinary given the time and place," said Bullock.

Bullock went to Washington to serve the Youngs with their charges Tuesday.

"There wasn't an arrest made from strategic reasons," said Brett Linneweber, Park County Attorney. "We did talk that over with the family, but I am not going to go into any more detail on that. We thought that it might help the investigation that is still ongoing."

MHP is still looking for additional suspects in the case because Wryan Young told police the semi in front of her hit Bedford first.

Both, Young and Westley are expected to be seen in Sweet Grass County courthouse on December 10 at 9:30 a.m.

If convicted, Young could face up to 10 years for failing to report the incident and be fined $50,000. Young and Westley could both face up to 10 years for tampering with evidence and be fined up to $50,000.
