New Details Emerge in Anaconda Homicide

ANACONDA -

A 21-year-old Anaconda man is officially charged with deliberate homicide after making an appearance in Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Justice Court Tuesday for allegedly shooting and killing 45-year-old Robert Furman in the head over the weekend at an Anaconda residence.

According to Anaconda police, the suspect 21-year-old Dylan Jess and the victim, 45-year-old Robert Furman, were at a house party together in Opportunity Friday night where police believe they were drinking alcohol.

Together, along with other friends, Jess and Furman returned to Furman's residence in Anaconda later that night.

It was soon after that Furman lost his life when a gun was jokingly pulled out.

"The suspect had grabbed a shotgun," said Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Chief of Police Tim Barkell. "The victim had took it back, ejected the shells, or thought he had ejected all the shells from the shotgun, placed it under his chin and said, "You want to play a game? Go ahead." So the suspect reached over and pulled the trigger."

Furman died at the scene from a bullet to the head.

While witnesses say they thought the gun was emptied, others are now saying they saw Furman load a bullet in the gun after emptying it.

It's an incident that has shocked and surprised neighbors.

"He was really nice to me and I'm just going to miss the guy and not being able to say hello to him all of the time," said Furman's neighbor, Dan Thomas.

"It's pretty upsetting," said Rob Driggs, an Anaconda resident. "There's been a lot of it in the community the last couple of years. It's touched a lot of families, these types of tragedies, especially going into the holidays. With the stuff that happened last holidays, it's a shame."

Jess is officially being charged with deliberate homicide. He is set to appear in court for a preliminary hearing in December.

Jess is being held on $250,000 bond.
