Native American Reporter Publishes Memoir

Posted: Updated:

Hattie Kauffman is the first Native American to file a report on a network news and recently released a memoir called, "Falling into Place".

In it, she shares her story of overcoming a rough upbringing on the Nez Perce Reservation and Seattle, and her path to becoming an Emmy award-winning reporter.

"It goes back to not letting yourself be defined by the circumstances," Kauffman said.

It wasn't long into her career that Hattie made history by becoming the first Native American to file a story with a network news channel while working for Good Morning America in Hawaii.

"I didn't even know it was making news at the time I was simply reporting news. But in doing my job, I was making news in terms of breaking that barrier because that evening it was the first time on network evening news a Native American reporter appeared."

Now her work with Good Morning America and CBS is known worldwide, and has earned her four Emmy awards.

Hattie says her heritage and connections with Native American communities have put forward a unique perspective that is still largely absent in network news.

"When you think about story telling is part of our culture almost every tribe has an oral history, its who we are. We know ourselves by our stories so you think there would be more Native American reporters I really don't know why there aren't."

Hattie's work now is mostly related to traveling around the country sharing her story, supporting American Indian education, and encouraging future generations of native reporters to push forward in the news.

"So often we cover what we know, people do that all the time. It's important to have a little crack in that and get some other perspectives."

Kauffman recently released a memoir titled, "Falling Into Place" that she will be signing at the Garden of Read'n in Missoula Saturday afternoon between 2:00 and 3:30.
