Matt McHugh: The Honor Roll QB

Whether it's on the field, or in the classroom, Matt McHugh does pretty well.

"He's a big strong kid, he's fast.  I mean he's everything you want to have in a football player," says Missoula Loyola Sacred Heart football coach Dan Weber.

"He's admired, partly because he doesn't spend a lot of time telling people how wonderful he is.  I think they recognize his abilities, and he's a friendly hard working kid, so he gets along with everybody," says LSH AP English teacher Beverly Williams.

As an impressive three sport athlete, Matt enjoys academics just as much, carrying a 4.0, GPA and being a candidate for class valedictorian, and in education, his competitive nature works toward his advantage.

"It's not so much competitive against other people, but I like to set goals for myself, and it's more competitive against myself to see how well I can do," says McHugh.

But for as impressive as McHugh is, it's pretty easy to tell he's uncomfortable getting the attention.

"He would rather someone else be in the spotlight than him, and that's okay.  That's a good personality trait for a young man to have," says Weber.

And when he's not in the spotlight, he's still ever-present, being a leader for the National honor Society at the Loyola, helping with service projects.

"One of them is the blood drive, which we do annually, and the other one is doing a special student Olympics to raise money for the Watson Children's Shelter," says Williams.

As for how he approaches sports and school, it's pretty simple.

"I think it boils down to integrity.  Whatever you ask of your classmates or your teammates, you have to be able to do yourself, and it's also leading by example, because that's how you fulfill the expectations, that's how you set standards for yourself and your teammates or classmates," says McHugh.
