Missoula Man Gets Life in Prison for Dixon Murder

Posted: Updated:
THOMPSON FALLS -

The man accused of stabbing a Dixon man to death in a drug-fueled rage last December, will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Nathan Calvert, 32, was sentenced to two, consecutive life sentences in the Montana state prison on Tuesday in Sanders County District Court.

In September, Calvert admitted to stabbing Doug Morigeau 54 times to death and attempting to kill Morigeau's wife, Cheryl by slitting her throat -- all while under the influence of a synthetic marijuana called "spice."

It was an emotional two hours of testimony inside the courtroom, but family members of the victim said a life sentence, means they finally have closure.

State prosecutors called Doug Morigeau's three siblings to the stand, all of whom agreed with prosecutors' suggested sentence of life in prison without parole.

"My brother didn't deserve to die like this."

"You know, he took away something that I'll never get back."

"And to have his life taken away at that age, that's something I can't… I don't understand."

In December, Calvert broke into the Morigeaus' home, stabbed Morigeau to death and slit the throat of his wife, who survived the attack.

Morigeau's wife, Cheryl, also spoke, despite only having the use of one vocal chord after Calvert slit her throat.

"The hardest part is the loss of security and feeling safe, though," she said.

The defense argued Calvert should receive treatment for his schizo-affective disorder and chemical dependency in a mental hospital.

Dr. Virginia Hill, Calvert's psychiatrist, said, "For the most part, if individuals cooperate with their medication program, we can keep these symptoms at a residual level."

But, in the end, Judge Kim Christopher said she had to deliver justice to Morigeau's family, and sentenced Calvert to two consecutive terms of life in prison.

"I'm glad that she recognized that he needs to be kept off the streets," said Cheryl.

Judge Kim Christopher said she will not impose any restrictions on the possibility of parole for Calvert.

Calvert was charged with deliberate homicide, attempted deliberate homicide, aggravated burglary and robbery.

August and September is mating season for the hobo and that means you may be seeing more funnel-like webs in and around your home. Males are on a mission to find a female which is why they are a lot more active at this time.
