Kalispell Sees Increased Voter Turnout

Posted: Updated:
KALISPELL -

With more than 3,800 ballots already mailed in with three hours until the polls close, the Flathead county elections are a little busier than usual.

Booths here at the Northwest Montana Fairgrounds Trade Center will be open until 8:00 p.m. on November 5 for voters, but by noon, turnout had already far exceeded expectations.

"It's going quite well this year, actually. We though it'd be slow," said Anita Bergman.

Anita Bergman has been working elections in Kalispell for eight years.

"You feel like you're doing your duty for country and third, you get to know all these people and it's really fun," said Bergman.

She is helping out voters in ward four. She says she believes the increased voter turnout she has seen is due, in part, to the airport issue on the ballot: whether to repeal city council's resolution and leave the airport as is, or go ahead with council's decision and expand it. She says Kalispell Municipal flights can be seen and heard in ward four.

"It's been pretty steady today, which is better than usual... Usually there's not much turnout for city elections, but it's been pretty good today," explained Monica Eisenzimer, the Flathead county election coordinator.

In Whitefish, four candidates are running for three city council spots. All ballots must be mailed in to either the city hall or the old courthouse in Kalispell by 8:00 p.m.

Voters in Columbia Falls have until 8:00 p.m. as well to cast their ballots for five candidates vying for three city council positions, although one did drop out too late to have his name removed. Polls are located in the council chambers in city hall.

The mayoral races for Columbia Falls and Kalispell are both uncontested.

While a picture id is a must, Bergman also suggests looking up your district before hitting the polls, online, or asking the election official closest to the Trade Center doors.

Columbia Falls city council candidate, Duane Moore, dropped out of the race late, so his name still appears on the ballot.
