The Flathead City-County Health Department is trying once again to streamline dog licensing in Kalispell, but Flathead county commissioners and city officials would both have to get on board.
Right now, the health department handles licensing for all of Flathead county except Kalispell and Whitefish, which both record licenses with a non-electronic system.
Licenses also have to be renewed annually, but health officer, Joe Russell, hopes to extend this over a pet's lifetime for a one-time, fifty dollar charge as long as the animal's vaccinations are kept up-to-date.
"Is dog licensing important? Well from a legal perspective it certainly is, but from a practical perspective it's how you get your dog back," said Russell.
Russell says he plans to get the issue in front of city council in an upcoming work session.
