A specialty license plate program raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to go to the University of Montana.

$118,000 were collected over the past six years from Montanans who pay a small donation with their annual vehicle registration. About $50,000 of the license plate funds received so far will be matched by an anonymous donor as part of a lake monitoring challenge grant. Organizers said license plate and challenge grant funds support monitoring of Flathead Lake Water Quality and ecology.

"Having clean water allows us to drink, grow plants. We can swing and boat and recreate on the lake also the lake really boosts property value in the area," said Tom Bansak, research scientist/development coordinator.

The project was spearheaded by the Flathead Lake Protection Association. A grass-roots group that supports efforts to preserve water quality in the Flathead Basin.
