Poaching Common In Montana

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks is investigating yet another moose poaching.

This moose was found at the Yorks Islands Fishing Access just south of Townsend.

"I'm disgusted by them," said Vito Quartraro, hunter.

Since September, officials report three poached moose across the state.

The first was during the first week in September. Officials found a cow moose at Moser Creek.  Just this weekend a bull moose was found near Schwartz Creek Road near Missoula and now another bull moose at the Yorks Islands Fishing Access just south of Townsend is found poached.

And people aren't happy about it.

"My fear is that hunters and hunting will take the blame for poaching," said Quartraro.

Quartraro has been hunting for over 50 years.

He said there is a difference between hunters and poachers.

"These are not hunters. No rational hunter would poach an animal and leave it lay."

Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks wildlife biologist Howard Burt says poaching has always been an issue in Montana, but more people are paying attention to the recent moose poachings.

"I think moose have been in the spotlight a little more now because their numbers have decreased and people are keeping an eye out for them," said Burt.

Even with those lower numbers, Burt said they aren't too concerned about the moose population.

"Right now I don't think poaching is really, from what we can see anyway, a significant impact we are detecting anyway," said Burt.

Still he doesn't like seeing any moose poached. Quartraro said he's not sure why people would leave an animal to rot.

"I don't know why it happens," said Quartraro. "There's a certain element. I think often times they don't have hunting licenses, but they just go out there for just the thrill or whatever reason."

The few people who drew moose permits can still legally hunt moose until December 1.

If you have any information on any poaching, you are asked to call 800-TIP-MONT.

You could be eligible for a reward.

KHQ.COM - Mid August is about the time that we start to see spiders come into our homes, particularly the hobo spider. August and September is mating season for the hobo and that means you may be seeing more funnel-like webs in and around your home. Males are on a mission to find a female which is why they are a lot more active at this time.
