Reporter Goes Ghost Hunting

Posted: Updated:
WEST GLACIER -

This story may be a little spooky for some.

Sobs coming from empty rooms, footsteps thudding in vacant halls, hearing your name when there is no one alive to say it--all in a day at one West Glacier lodge. ABC Fox Montana's Parker Collins went ghost hunting on Halloween at the Belton Chalet, and lived to tell the tale.

For ten years, Christie Dunn has been turning the lights on at the Belton Chalet. Even when the halls are empty, she says she believes she is never alone here.

"I'm not afraid of them. I mean, I consider them year-round guests," explained Dunn.

Everyone's run in with the ghosts at the Belton varies. Dunn remembers vividly the night she slept alone in the chalet, one cold December night.

"I woke up in the middle of the night to someone walking to my door, but I never heard the knock. So I laid there thinking 'where's the knock?' It never happened," recalled Dunn.

A fellow employee came to wake her up at dawn, unable to explain the footsteps. While dunn has never seen an apparition herself, she has heard all about it from the guests.

"From one lady saying a man is in her room all night talking to her. We've had a gentleman say that he turned around and there was a Native American little girl in the shower," said Dunn.

Many guests and employees have reported the water turning on and off spontaneously, without anybody else in the room there to do it.

Andy Baxter bought the Belton in 1996. Back then, some of the encounters were a little more forceful, so he had the place cleansed with a Native American ritual.

"He's a big man, probably 6' 6"...300 pounds fitness of health," recalled Baxter, "and he walks around carrying an abalone shell and goes to every door and we must have, I don't know, 85 doors, and cleansed every portal."

Something happened when the medicine man came to the last door.

"My hair if you can see me without my clothes on is standing on end as I tell this story, and all the energy went out of the door like a vacuum."

"Things did change and it became more kiddish," said Dunn, regarding the supernatural happenings after the cleansing.

At the beginning of her tenure, Dunn's old boss would say she lit up the room like a Christmas tree to work up the courage to pass through. Today, she does not seem to mind the dark.

Dunn also points out the fall is prime time for paranormal activity. Sightings typically taper off during the peak of tourist season in the summer.
