Butte Freshman Kicker

Posted: Updated:
Some boys dream of being a quarterback, running back, or a ferocious linebacker. Not Sean Staples. He wanted to be something else.

"It comes natural to me. I love doing it. I used to play soccer when I was little. I wanted to be a kicker since I was in little guy," said Staples.

The five foot five 120 pound freshman has gotten better from the first game to the last game.

"First games are a lot of pressure and then some really close games have been a lot of pressure but other than that I'm just pretty calm," said Staples.

"He doesn't get as jittered as much as before now it's weak 10 he's been out here with the older guys he's a little bit more relaxed and calm and that's definitely helping him," said Butte High head coach Arie Grey.

Staples has made 44 of 53 extra points this season, and has the respect of one famous senior.

"He probably has more heart than all of us. Being five five 115 pounds out there it's got to be a little frightening. There's not much freshmen that can go out there and kick a meaningful PAT or field goal," said Butte quarterback Dallas Cook.

Quarterback Dallas Cook is almost as tall on one knee as Staples when he holds for PATs. So does it make Coach Grey laugh a little?

"Laugh a little bit laugh a lot. We make that comment every single time. We keep thinking he's getting shorter and Dallas is getting taller. More entertaining when you're watching film you're looking from it from up above and you're thinking oh my gosh he is tiny! He's one guy's leg!

If the game comes down to a kick, Staples has the confidence of his coach.

"Oh he'll definitely put it in. You look at practice today we trot him out there no time on the clock and he hits it. I will not hesitate one bit to run him out there and do that."
