Hellgate Girls Soccer Proving To Be A Threat

Posted: Updated:

The Hellgate boys soccer team's success is no secret, as they've been one of the top teams in the west, and collected a state title just in the last two years.  Their girls team however, hasn't been as fortunate, in fact, heading into this season, the senior class hadn't even won a state playoff game, and they heard plenty about  it.

"There's been jokes over the years about the girls never going to state, so there's always been a sense of trying to prove them wrong," says senior forward Morgan Elrod.

And the way the 2013 season started, things weren't looking great for the Knights, as they didn't register through their first six games.

"It was hard, but we were always there for each other throughout the entire thing, even when it was bad," says senior defender Sadie Palmatier.

So a change needed to take place, and the team found inspiration in a fairly unique way.

"We had this kind of weird voodoo,  sock burning ceremony where we all burned our socks, and I wasn't present at the time, but it worked, and we did some dances, and that's not usual behavior, but I guess it worked," says Palmatier.

"It finally came together.  People with injuries started coming back, and it just seemed like we kept progressing, building, and believing.  The confidence started to grow," says head coach Caroline Lurgio.

For the group of seniors, who are going to their first state tournament of their high school careers, it's quite the experience.

"I can't even describe to you the feeling of getting to go to state senior year for the first time, I started playing on varsity freshman year a little bit, and I remember going to each play-off game and losing, and the pain that was on the face of the seniors those years, and changing it for our class, and starting a new pathway for the upcoming seniors, and new freshman," says Elrod.
