City Hosts Open House on Soup Kitchen Ordinance

MISSOULA -

City officials are hosting an open house Tuesday night in hopes of getting public comment on a zoning ordinance for soup kitchens and homeless shelters.

In September, city council members passed an interim ordinance that prohibits the construction of homeless shelters and kitchens in residential areas.

City officials said the interim ordinance does allow a developer to apply for a conditional use permit to build in commercial zones.

On Tuesday, the city's Development Services department will present the first draft of a permanent ordinance to the public.

"Sort of an informal setting, and it's a way that we can get comment and direction on  what we should be doing in the future with the ordinance," said Thomas Zavitz, of Development Services.

City officials said zoning ordinances for homeless shelters and similar services are common in other cities.

The open house takes place Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. in city council chambers on W. Pine St.
