General Hunting Season Starts Saturday

BUTTE -

General rifle season for deer and elk officially starts Saturday throughout Montana.

This year Fish, Wildlife, and Parks are increasing their cow elk tags.

They say elk numbers are increasing around southwestern Montana.

While hunting is expected to be good, they say upcoming winter weather conditions could have an effect on herds.

"As soon as we get that first big snow, a lot of the elk will start to move towards winter ranges, in that direction," said Shane Yaskus, a game warden with F.W.P. "We have seen a lot of movement. For instance, over the Mill Creek Highway and the Scenic Byway. Elk are moving towards their winter range already."

Fish, Wildlife, and Parks says the general season is opening a few days later than usual this year.

The general hunting season will go through December 1.
