Cats Selfless Setter

Posted: Updated:

Anna Sykora is ranked in the top 3 in assists in the Big Sky. And she's only a freshman. But the South Dakota native didn't always want to be a setter.

"I always wanted to be a hitter growing up because I thought that would be the most fun position because you got to hit the ball you got to smack the ball down people's faces but once I got to high school I realized I enjoyed setting and I liked the leadership role of being a setter," said Sykora.

Sykora is such an effective setter because she's very deceptive with her hands.

"She goes up with her hands and they're so high over hear head you can't tell if she's going forwards or backwards she doesn't really give you a tell she's very unpredictable. When she sets it backwards people still think she's going outside," said senior libero Nicole Baker.

"You have to look at the other side of the court what are the blockers doing but mainly it's just focusing on getting the ball to the right spot at the right time and setting your hitters up for success," said Sykora.

Unlike other sports, Sykora's assists don't give her that much recognition.

"Someone in ice hockey with assists for those. She doesn't get points. She touches the ball the most of anyone on the floor and gets the least amount of credit," said head coach Kyle Weindel.

"You get used to it you don't get as much glory as the hitters but it's all worth it when you get to set someone and then watch them say thank you," said Sykora.

And she definitely has the respect of her teammates off the court.

"She's probly the nicest and sweetest person you're ever going to meet you walk into a room and she just brightens your day because she's always in a good mood she always has something positive to say and it's great having a player like that on the team," said Baker.
