Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Celebrates Opening Land To Public

Posted: Updated:
LEWISTOWN -

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is celebrating land it bought near Lewistown to increase public access in the Lewis and Clark County Forest. The group said buying this small piece of land will allow people to use tens of thousands of acres of one of Montana's forests.

The group recently bought the 40-acre parcel of private land in Fergus county for $190,000. The land backs up into the forest, increasing public access in the Big Snowy Mountains by almost 18,000 acres. FWP will manage the land for hunters and other recreational activities.

"On that land is an elk objective, the elk population is actually over objective, which is a great opportunity for hunters, so it's great for hunters right now, and it's great for people who aren't hunters, people who like to hike, people who like to get out and enjoy nature for the future from here on out," said Mark Holyoak with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

The Red Hill Dedication Ceremony is set for Wednesday at 3 p.m. It will be held 22 miles south of downtown Lewistown on Red Hill Road//Route238. For directions take a look at the map from RMEF.
