Bass Creek Logging Project Completed, Area to Reopen

STEVENSVILLE -

After five months of work, crews have completed a 765-acre tree thinning project in the Bass Creek recreation area.

Bitterroot National Forest Service officials said the goal of the thinning project was to protect ponderosa pine trees from pine beetle attacks, which have occurred in areas surrounding Bass Creek.

They said Pyramid Mountain Lumber Company of Seeley Lake logged 4 million board feet of timber during the project.

The project closed the popular recreation area for the entire summer, as 1,100 truck loads of timber were hauled out.

Tod McKay, of the Bitterroot National Forest Service, said, "It looks fantastic, we did a little walk through the end of last week and the site looks great, it's really nice to get a lot of the blue trees that were marked out of there."

Forest service officials say 50,000 people ride horses, hike and camp through Bass Creek every year.

They plan to re-open the area on November 1.
