Proposed Speed Limit Change On Valley Center Road

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

Motorists may soon be allowed to drive faster along Valley Center Road west of Bozeman.

The Gallatin County Commissioners are considering raising the speed limit on Valley Center Road from 45 mph to 50. And it has some people upset.

"I don't think any change at all is needed," said Mike Schendeman.  "If anything, the section between Haper Pucket Road and Love Lane should be slowed down."

The Department of Transportation did a speed study on the road at the request of the county commissioners.

Based on M.D. T. observations, they said they believe the speed limit should be raised to 50 mph, a speed in which 85 percent of drivers were already driving, according to the recent study.

Michael Banville lives in the Wylie Creek subdivision on the south side of Valley Center Road.  He agrees with the study.

"I personally believe it could be higher, but I think 50 to 55 is the max limit it should be," said Banville.

Schwendeman lives in the Valley Grove subdivision on the north side of the road.

He said it's not safe where it is now, because of this bike/pedestrian path on the south side of the road.

"I watched at least a dozen people walk up from Mountain Lion Trail cross valley center over to the bike path," said Schwendeman.

Sunni Tenhor also lives in Valley Grove.

She walks her dogs along the bike/pedestrian path often.

Even though she has to cross the street to use the path, she would like to see the speed limit raised, especially for her morning commute.

'When I drive to work it is crawling at 45 mph," said Tenhor.  "I don't want to see it raised to high where it is ridiculous."

The speed limit on Valley Center Road was raised to 35 from 45 in 2000 after the road was rebuilt.

The public comment period on the proposed speed limit change will last until October 31.

That is when the transportation commission will take up the issue during their meeting in Helena.  That meeting will be at 8:30 a.m. in the MDT Commission Room, 2701 Prospect Ave.

You can comment at the meeting or send your comments to Lori Ryan P.O. Box 20100, Helena, MT 59620 or via email at lryan@mt.gov.
