The Griz Beat Cal Poly in Overtime

Posted: Updated:

The Griz battled Cal Poly on Saturday at Washington-Grizzly Stadium winning in overtime 21 - 14.

The University of Montana started the game with a 7-0 lead on the Cal Poly Mustang's but weren't able to score on any more drives in the first half. Cal Poly's defense were tough, stopping completions and giving Jordan Johnson his first interception of the season. At the end of the half the Mustang's led 14-7.

Griz Coach Delany was critical of their offensive play, "We were very, very sporadic on offense. You can't get behind schedule on 1st downs and then be forced to throw the ball. We have to get back and run the football. This kind of offense you're not going get a whole bunch of possessions, so you better take advantage of them and put points on the board when you do."

Coach Delany also had an update on Travon Van who was injured earlier in the game, "Travon hurt an ankle I believe, he is probably done for the day, I'm not sure how bad, but I know he is done for today."

The Griz tried to turn things around in the middle of the third. Their defense held off Cal Poly and kept them from scoring, but offense failed to put up any points in the quarter keeping it 14-7.

Early in the 4th Johnson had a solid drive to put them in scoring position but he fumbled at the end zone leaving him scoreless for the game. Tripp Johnson then recovered a Cal Poly fumble for a turnover but the Griz again failed to cross the end zone on the possession. Jordan Tripp had one of the game winning plays when he blocked a field goal attempt by Cal Poly, the second of the day, giving them one more chance at a scoring possession. The Griz pulled it together and scored a TD with only :12 seconds to spare, tying the game 14-14 at the end of regulation play.

The Griz started overtime on offense and Johnson came through with a 23 yard pass to Ellis Henderson who battled his way into the end zone to score giving UM a 21 – 14 lead. Brock Coyle ended the game with an interception for the Griz. This win brings UM 6-1 for the season and 3-1 in conference play.

Jordan Johnson threw for a total of 242 yards but the Griz only put up 73 rushing. Cal Poly had a total of 95 passing yards with 308 rushing. Both teams had 2 turnovers, each with a fumble and an interception.

KHQ.COM - Mid August is about the time that we start to see spiders come into our homes, particularly the hobo spider. August and September is mating season for the hobo and that means you may be seeing more funnel-like webs in and around your home. Males are on a mission to find a female which is why they are a lot more active at this time.
