BOZEMAN -

Wednesday was National Fossil Day designated by the National Park Service. Even though service is closed due to the Government shutdown, the Museum of the Rockies is still celebrating the day.

The purpose of fossil day is to promote and foster an awareness of the importance of fossils. Today, more than 230 national parks are known to preserve fossils.

Museum of the Rockies Education Director, Angie Weikert said fossils are important for both education and scientific study.

"We have such a great diversity of fossils in Montana that we can find and such great access to them. This day is meant to spark the interest of the public, kids and adults," said Weikert.

Weikert said all research done at the museum are based on fossils found right here in Montana.
