Domestic Violence Grows In Gallatin County

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence 1.3 million women are physically assaulted by their partner every year. This month is domestic violence awareness month.

Haven is a non-profit in the Gallatin Valley that serves victims of domestic violence. For the second year in a row, the organization has seen a steady increase in the number of people using their services.

"Two years we saw a 15% increase and this most recent fiscal year we saw 14% increase," said Erica Coyle, Haven Development Coordinator.

In the past three months, Haven had an average of 25 new clients each week. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 85% of domestic violence victims nationally are women and those statistics are true for Haven as well.

"In shelter, we usually about half of the clients staying in shelter are children and the other half are women," said Coyle.

Coyle said as Gallatin County grows, so does the number of victims of domestic violence.

"Domestic violence isn't happening more often, but people are feeling more comfortable reaching out to Haven for services," said Coyle.

Haven's 24-hour crisis line is always a source for people who are victims of domestic violence or for people who know someone or think someone is in crisis.

"We have trained advocates here to answer anytime day or night. They just want to support you as a victim and make sure you have the safest possible option moving forward," said Coyle. "We'll get calls from people that aren't primary victims themselves, but who are just concerned about their sister or their brother and they want to know what they can do to help."

Coyle said if you are crisis don't hesitate to call their crisis line. Over the past year, Haven's crisis line calls have increased by 58%, totaling more than 4,100 calls.

Tickets are still available for Haven's biggest fundraiser Taste of Haven going on Saturday night at the Emerson, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event will have hors d'oeuvres, a silent auction and music.
