Firefighters Share Ways To Avoid Kitchen Fires

BOZEMAN -

Cooking fires account for half the fires across the nation. This week, firefighters want to remind the public how to avoid a fire in your kitchen.

Josh Charles with the Bozeman Fire Department said you should always have at least a three feet kid zone around the oven and stove.

He said there are a few simple steps you can do to prevent a kitchen fire in your home.

"If you do get an oven fire, we suggest shutting the oven door. If the fire goes out, it's normally safe. If it does not go out immediately call 911 and exit the house," said Charles. "If it's something on top of the stove, simply place a cap or the lid of the pot on top of the burning object."

Charles adds nearly two-thirds of smoke fatals are caused by non-working smoke detectors.
