New Breast Reconstruction Doctor In Bozeman

BOZEMAN -

A new breast reconstruction doctor is now available to serve women at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital.

"First thing I did was call my husband and cry," said Shannon Solyst who is a breast cancer survivor.

Shannon Solyst was diagnosed with breast cancer on June 14th 2012.

"They did the biopsy and I got a phone call the next day saying that I had cancer," said Solyst.

At that time, Bozeman Deaconess Hospital did not have a doctor that did mastectomies, so Shannon had to get her first mastectomy in Billings.

"At that point they thought it was just in one localized tumor, so I was sent to a surgeon and she said we will just do a lymactechmony," said Solyst. "While I was at that surgeon's office, a MRI report came back and said that there was another suspicious area."

That suspicious area ended up being a four centimeter tumor. Shannon went through two rounds of chemotherapy and 33 radiation treatments. She said it was like an out of body experience.

"I kept telling myself you just have to get through the next phase," said Solyst.

When Shannon went back for her annual exam, there was another lump in her right breast. In February, she had her second mastectomy in Bozeman with Doctor Shauna Werth Kronfuss who specializes in oncoplastic breast surgery.

Although the lump was not cancerous, Shannon felt better getting it removed completely.

"There are also patients who have a genetic disposition to things like breast cancer and a lot of times those women decide to have their breasts remove entirely event without having a cancer to begin with," said Dr. Kronfuss.

Shannon said although it was a devastating time, she is glad to be cancer free.

"It's awful while it's happening, but you sure learn a lot through it," said Solyst.

Shannon has been cancer free since April 15th.
