Day 2 Of WA Health Exchange: It's Working

SEATTLE (AP) - Washington state's new health insurance exchange is open and ready for business on its second day of operation.
SEATTLE (AP) - Washington state's new health insurance exchange is open and ready for business on its second day of operation. Computer problems closed the website for the health insurance marketplace for hours on Tuesday morning, its first day of operation. A spokesman for the exchange says glitches are part of the story for any new software launch.

KHQ.COM - The government rolled out its Affordable Care Act this week, which has security experts warning people of scammers rolling out their own plan. The worry is that scammers are going to take advantage of the confusion surrounding the new health insurance exchange and likely try to coerce people into giving out their private confidential information; like social security numbers, credit card information and bank account numbers.

Internet security experts expect the thieves to dress up emails that look like they're from the government, enticing them to click on a bad link. Verizon Risk Team Member Wade Baker says "We need to be suspicious of it. If it's unsolicited, comes from someone you don't know, that should be an automatic flag. If it's poorly written, that's another flag".

Beyond keeping an eye out for suspicious emails and websites, here are some other important things to consider:

  • The government is not calling anyone about the Affordable Care Act.
  • It is not sending emails and it is not knocking on people's doors.
  • If you want to find out information from a legitimate source, go to HealthCare.Gov/
  • And keep in mind, there is no rush.  If you don't already have health insurance, you have through March 31st to buy.

Bottom line: it's best to take your time and do your homework so that you don't end up getting taken by one of these scammers.
