State AA Golf Day One

I'm Shaun Rainey here at the Missoula Country Club for the state AA golf tournament and some rain last night making for some wet conditions but the good news is no rain or snow here today, so let's get to the highlights.

Let's start on the boy's side, a brisk morning to start things off, but unlike the weather Billings Senior's Sean Benson came out hot.  Already two under Benson trying to save par out of the bunker on six.  Not the best bunker shot but he made up for it with the putter, he gets the up and down and is your leader shooting a one over 72.

"Yea I'm really comfortable with my score after hearing all the other scores and my teammates scores, I'm happy where I'm at right now and hopefully that gives me a shot at tomorrow," said Billings Senior Sean Benson.

Behind Benson is the Hellgate Knight Pat Colberg.  After his tee shot went into the trees on eight Colberg trying to chip up and save par.  He uses the slope nicely and follows it up with a solid putt for par.  He finished two shots off the lead after round one with a 74.

"Yea I'm happy with it, I figured three over would be pretty close to the lead and we have a whole other day tomorrow.  This being my home course I knew I could do pretty good and I'm happy with my score for sure," said Hellgate Knight Pat Colberg.

And right on Colberg's heals is Cody Babinecz from Great Falls High.  Cody said the slow play got him out of rhythm and his swing wasn't where he wanted it to be but he chipped well shooting a 75 and knows what it will take to win tomorrow.

"Go low, I think I am three shots back with everyone coming in so I am going to have to go pretty low to catch them," said Great Falls High Junior Cody Babinecz.

And on the girls side the shot of the day came from Glacier's Teigan Avery who stuck her approach shot on number one to within inches of the cup.  She would tap that in for birdie and finish tied for the lead at 72.  Meanwhile defending state champion Kortney McNeil from Billings Senior shot a 77 and has some room to make up to defend her title.

"I was expecting a little better but I couldn't get anything going out there but I'm expecting better tomorrow that's for sure," said Broncs Senior Kortney McNeil.

Those are your highlights from day one, tomorrow the golfer will go to Canyon River for the second round of the state tournament.
