A 32-year-old Butte man is charged with killing his 8-week-old daughter last month.

Butte-Silver Bow County Sheriff Ed Lester said Matthew John Blaz was arrested Thursday and appeared in Justice Court on a charge of deliberate homicide in the August 16 death of Mattisyn Jolene Blaz.

Sheriff Lester said during a news conference on Friday that law enforcement were called to a home in the 2000 block of Arizona Street at about 4:20 p.m. When they arrived, authorities found the unresponsive baby in a car in a carseat, and the parents were preparing to take her to the hospital. Officials deemed the baby deceased at the scene.

Mattisyn's body was transported to the Montana State Crime Lab in Missoula for an autopsy. Recently released results from the autopsy, according to court documents, revealed that the baby's death was due to abusive head trauma, not an accidental fall as originally reported. Court records also indicated Blaz was with the baby at the time she suffered the fatal injuries.

Blaz is currently jailed in the Butte-Silver Bow County Detention Center.
