Crime Tracker: SPD Plans To Adopt Precinct Model

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - It's been almost a year since Spokane Police Chief Frank Straub joined the force, and one of the biggest overhauls he's proposed is the adoption of a precinct model for the force.  The model would base police officers throughout the City, instead of one central location at the Public Safety Building.

So far, SPD has opened its downtown precinct, which is located next to the STA Bus Plaza.  The precinct opened in June and Chief Straub says the home base at this location makes his officers more visible and accessible to the public.  It’s also the hub for C.O.P.S Community Police Service Volunteers.  When it opened, Chief Straub said the precinct is a prototype for what he'd like to implement across the City.

Today, the KHQ Crime Trackers are going to check in with how that precinct is operating so far.  The Crime Trackers will ask Downtown Precinct Captain Judi Carl if she thinks her officers’ presence is helping fight crime.  They’ll also ask people and businesses downtown if they feel more safe with the increased police presence in their neighborhood.
