Monte Doing Well in Capital One Mascot Challenge

Posted: Updated:

Monte the bear is synonymous with Grizzly athletics, and is a huge hit with just about everyone he meets.

"Because he's funny and he does cool stuff when he's on the ground." says young Griz fan Andrew Lamb.

"He dives on the ground, he does lots of funny stuff, he dives off the field goal posts, he goes on the field and does tricks and stuff, and he dances around on time outs," adds another young fan, James Kicking Woman.

Since he's so popular, Monte has also been a fixture on the Capital One Mascot Challenge…with a history of success.

"He's made the team several times before, he won it on 2002 and 2004.  After that, the competition went viral so we were at a disadvantage then, but we still have a strong showing every year," says UM Director of New Media.

This year, in a twist on the competition, for twelve weeks, mascots go against one another for votes, and the ones with the best records will take part in a bracket style challenge, so far, Monte is 3-0, going up against schools with higher enrollments.

"It's really just because the passion of Griz nation, they really get behind Monte and do whatever they can for him, whether it's voting for five hours straight, or if it means coming out here on a rainy day and getting a picture with him in the end zone, they do whatever it takes to get it done," says UM Director of New Media Brent Reser.

Today, fans braved the cold temperatures and rain to show off their best touchdown dances, which when posted to social media sites, gives Monte extra points…and going forward, the Griz faithful are confident Monte will continue his success in the completion.

"He's a great mascot, and he's going to win, I know that," says Kicking Woman.

"Because no other mascot compares, they can't do what Monte can do.  Monte can break-dance, he can tumble, he can get anyone up on their feet, other mascots can't do that," says Reser.
