Bear Trap Road Closed Due To Mudslides

Posted: Updated:
MADISON COUNTY -

A popular recreation area is closed. The Bear Trap Road remains closed after mudslides continue to block the road.

Since last week, when heavy rainfall caused multiple mudslides to rush down the road, the recreation area has been closed.

"There is no vegetation to hold stuff in place plus we've had a lot of weird rain storms that have all gone into one spot," said Keith Johnson, Bureau of Land Management.

I caught up with James Fredrickson as he tried to access the road.

"I was pretty bummed out. I really love this section on the Bear Trap side," said Fredrickson. "This time of year is when the fishing starts to get really good and the dry fly fishing starts to get really good."

The area is more prone to mudslides since the 2012 wildfire caused by fireworks swept through a part of the Bear Trap Wilderness.

"The soil moisture can't hold it and then it slides away especially with no vegetation there from the fire." said Johnson.

Johnson said that it will take years to clean up the area.

"We've been down there at least a half dozen times since spring clearing mudslides," said Johnson. "We usually have something come across the road after every rainstorm."

He said opening the road depends on the intensity of the rain storms, but they are trying their best.

"We are working on ways we can possible reengineer the road," said Johnson. "We want to see if there are some kind of barriers that we can put in place, so when it does slide it will capture it and not block the entire road."

Fredrickson said he hopes the road is cleaned up soon.

"I hope they open it up again for sure. It's a great recreation spot," said Fredrickson.

Johnson said he's not sure when the road will reopen.
