Shot Fired at Police in North Side Missoula Standoff

MISSOULA -

A single shot was fired at an armored police vehicle Monday afternoon, during an all day stand-off with an armed man inside his mobile home on the north side of Missoula.

Police have been negotiating with the man all day, and threatened to deploy gas inside his home if he didn't exit his trailer.

Dozens of residents in this north side neighborhood have been crowded around the scene, anxiously watching as a SWAT team negotiated with the man inside his mobile home.

Police said the incident began at about 6:30 a.m., when they received a call the suspect had assaulted another Missoula man on this street.

Missoula Police Sergeant Mark Horner said the alleged victim claimed he was attacked by the suspect this morning.

"The victim stated he had been inside the trailer, which is down the road here, that belongs to the suspect, had been in it earlier and saw the male had a weapon, he claims he'd been assaulted earlier in the day with that weapon," Horner said.

Sergeant Horner said they decided a SWAT team was necessary, because the man was armed, and was accompanied by a woman.

"Our understanding is she's not being held against her will at this point," he explained.

Police said they attempted to call the suspect on a land line and his cell phone. They said they even brought the man's mother to the scene, but he still refused to communicate.

Horner added, "He's refusing to come to the door, answer the door."

After failed attempts to contact the suspect over the phone, SWAT team members broke out a back window of the trailer and threw a phone inside the home. At that point, police say the suspect did begin to communicate with authorities.

Few details are known about the suspect, but next-door neighbors said the man's mobile home has recently seen frequent, strange visitors, including the woman that's been inside the mobile home with him.

Neighbors also said they overheard the suspect yelling and cursing, and throwing things around the trailer before the police arrived.

"We moved some of the neighbors and the people across the street out of the area, just for right now, just for safety reasons."
