Community Donates To Create Packages For Soldiers

Posted: Updated:

Wednesday marks the 12th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.

Thousands across the country will remember those who lost their lives and aided in the recovery efforts.

All this week, the Park County Senior Center, the Retired Senior and Volunteer Program and other non-profit organizations in Park and Gallatin counties will be collecting items to put together care packages for the servicemen and women overseas.

Shirley Bennett is one of the many people who has been volunteering this week, helping collect items to put in the packages.

"I think it's a wonderful idea because they're getting something from home and we might even hit some of our Montana boys," said Bennett.

She said it feels great to help out those who are so far away from home.
"I think of my uncle that was in World War II. He could have had more help at that time, so I try to do anything I can to help these folks," said Bennett.

Park County Retired Senior Volunteer Program Coordinator, Shannon Burke said these packages are a way for people to say thank you to all the men and women who fight for our freedom.

"It is allowing people to say thank you and remember those who might have been forgotten," said Burke. "I think it is about remembering that we have people that we expect to take care of us and they do it at the risk of their own lives."

They are also asking people sign posters saying thank you to local heroes like police and firemen for all their hard work in the community.

"People forget to say thank you or they recognize a face and not necessarily the names or the departments that they are attached to," said Burke.

And Bennett hopes to make a difference in the world.

"Peace with the world for everybody, so our boys wouldn't have to go over there," said Bennett.

If you would like to make a donation, bring you items to the Park County Senior Center in Livingston.
