Montana State came out strong in the second quarter. Jon Ellis and Shawn Johnson both got across the end zone in the first two drives, Bobcats up 22-5. SMU was down by 5 going into the last four minutes of the game. After a solid drive by Gilbert and one incomplete pass to the end zone, he threw to Joseph for the touchdown with :12 seconds remaining, SMU 31-30. The Bobcats tried one more play but it wasn't enough, SMU wins.

Conversions and penalties were hurting SMU throughout the game. The Bobcat's offense kept the pressure on with a big lead in the 2nd quarter. SMU's defense got more aggressive as the game progressed, putting pressure on DeNarius McGhee. MSU was able to maintain the lead but when Gilbert stepped up in the final 81 yard drive it was too much for the Bobcats, the final touchdown by Southern Methodist with 12 seconds left sealed it. The Cats fought a great game, keeping the lead throughout most of it, but they fell just short of victory this time putting the season at 1-1.
