Posted: Updated:

Tonight Southern Methodist hosted Montana State at Gerald Ford Stadium in Dallas,TX. A 4-yard touchdown in the final 12 seconds gave SMU the 31-30 victory, leaving the Bobcats with a 1-1 record for the season in a stunning defeat.

SMU started off with some momentum getting a quick two point safety but MSU turned it around with offensive pressure from DeNarius McGhee. Cody Kirk got the touchdown and after completing the conversion the Bobcats ended the first quarter up 8-5, grabbing the lead from SMU.

Montana State came out strong in the second quarter. Jon Ellis and Shawn Johnson both got across the end zone in the first two drives, Bobcats up 22-5. SMU pushed back and their offense came together late in the quarter, JaBryce Taylor's punt return of 55 yards closed the gap leaving the Bobcats a 22-19 lead.

The Bobcats kept the pressure on as Cody Kirk rushed the center for 12 yards to get a quick touchdown in the first drive of the 3rd quarter. MSU again completed the conversion pulling ahead 11 points, 30-19. After a field goal by SMU, Gilbert completed a huge 66 yard pass but SMU fumbled and Robert Marshall forced the ball giving the Cats possession at the end of the third, Bobcats 30-22.

MSU put on a stiff and effective defense as the 4th quarter began. Southern Methodist got a field goal but Gilbert was having trouble getting any completions. SMU was down by 5 going into the last four minutes of the game. After a solid drive by Gilbert and one incomplete pass to the end zone, he threw to Joseph for the touchdown with :12 seconds remaining, SMU 31-30. The Bobcats tried one more play but it wasn't enough, SMU wins.

Conversions and penalties were hurting SMU throughout the game. The Bobcat's offense kept the pressure on with a big lead in the 2nd quarter. SMU's defense got more aggressive as the game progressed, putting pressure on DeNarius McGhee. MSU was able to maintain the lead but when Gilbert stepped up in the final 81 yard drive it was too much for the Bobcats, the final touchdown by Southern Methodist with 12 seconds left sealed it. The Cats fought a great game, keeping the lead throughout most of it, but they fell just short of victory this time putting the season at 1-1.
