Solid Griz Backfield

Posted: Updated:
Last season Montana had one of the best rushing offenses in the country, and in week one they ran all over Appalachian State piling up 246 yards.

"First and foremost the offensive line did a great job with the way they just get a man on a man up front and do it like they do it makes it easy for the running backs to do what they were able to do," said Running Backs Coach Justin Green.

With moves like this Travon Van racked up 118 yards while his teammate Jordan Canada finished with 112, but despite two guys eclipsing the century mark the running backs say they can do better.

"I mean I think it was a decent start, I expect us to get better, I know we are going to get better and it's perfect I think we are going to operate," said Junior Running Back Jordan Canada.

In 2012 it was Dan Moore and Peter Ngyuen helping Canada in the backfield.  In 2013 the transfer from Marshall Van will split carries and Canada says he's excited about his new teammate.

"I mean the numbers speak for themselves the dude was killing it and they couldn't stop him.  I'm excited because when you get to run next to a guy that will just make the competition higher which will make both of us better and if we can run the ball they can't stop us," said Canada.

Coach Green says having a dynamic backfield of Canada, Van and Joey Counts makes his job a lot easier and the different style each runner brings to the offense makes them tough to defend.

"If we want to run power we are going to give it to Jordan because he is patient and he can find the hole and hit it.  Travon is more of a speed guy and we have some other things cooked up for him, and we want to get him on the edge because if you get him on the edge there's not a whole lot of guys that can catch him," said Green.

You won't see the Griz running backs in action this Saturday as Montana has a bye, but they will be relied upon heavily the following week as they travel to Grand Forks seeking revenge against North Dakota.
