Firefighter Fitness Challenge to Kick Off in Missoula

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

Hundreds of regional firefighters will go head-to-head in an intense fitness challenge this weekend, right here in Missoula.

The Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge is a two-day, regional event that promotes fitness within the first responder community.

Firefighters sprint up five flights of stairs in full gear, carrying 40 pounds of hose. Then, they drag a 175-pound dummy across the finish line.

The top three times from each five-person team determine the winner.

Justin Walsh, of the Missoula Fire Dept., said, "Basically, we have a course similar to what you see behind me set up at Station 4 -- that's our training grounds for this -- a lot of heavy weightlifting, a lot of cardio, a lot of dedication and a lot of long hours in a gym trying to chase down a winning time."

Missoula hasn't hosted the challenge since 1997, when a combined City and Rural Fire District team won the world championship.

That team won the world title again in 2001 with the current world record time of 4:19.33.

This year's competition starts at noon on Saturday afternoon on Pine Street in front of Sean Kelly's.
