Throwing for Success

Posted: Updated:
Bob Sager is a retired veterinarian who lives in the Gallatin Valley. But in 1983, one event changed the Montana native's outlook on life.

"On a veterinary out call one evening I rolled a pickup ended up underneath a pickup for about an hour till I dug myself out. During that period of time I did a mental bucket list," said Sager.

Athletic competition was on that list, and Bob started training for the throws pentathlon. Five field events including his favorite, the hammer throw. And in 2003, won bronze at the world championships in Puerto Rico. But suffered another setback the following year.

In 2004 I had a car that went over top of me broke my clavicle tore my interior deltoid and dislocated my shoulder six weeks before I went to the world championships in Germany," said Sager.

That didn't stop Bob from placing fourth in the hammer throw.

Bob doesn't just challenge himself athletically, but academically. Two years he got his masters in micro mineral nutrition, affecting the immune system in beef cattle. And next year, he'll get his doctorate in the same area.

"It's a personal goal. I made a decision one of the goal I had with my auto accident was continuing my education," said Sager.

At 65,  Bob still competes in the throws pentathlon. He'll go down to Brazil next month for the world championships. And he's not stopping anytime soon.

"There's a lot left to be accomplished. I hope to keep at the level I competed at 10 years ago," said Sager.

And he wants to continue competing for another 20 years.
