Governor Continues Back To School Tour At BHS

BOZEMAN -

On Thursday, Governor Steve Bullock continued his "Back to School Tour" across the treasure state by stopping at Bozeman High School.

There, he learned more about its dual enrollment program.

For three years, Bozeman High School has offered three dual enrollment classes, introduction to teaching, advanced math and applied writing to students.

Dual enrollment classes are designed to offer students college credits while they are still in high school. This spring, the district will offer juniors and seniors the opportunity to enroll in a new computer coding class.

"They're going to start with kind of a higher level of the history of computing, where it started, where we've gone and some key players in the field of computing right now," said Kerri Cobb, Bozeman High School Business Education Teacher.

Cobb said the number of jobs related to computer programming is increasing and this course is a great opportunity for students to get a jump start in the field.

"Students don't realize how much computer programming is. They think it's mostly gaming or apps and there's really a lot more out there for career opportunities," said Cobb.

In the last year, the number of students taking the dual enrollment classes has increased by three times.

"We're projecting about 150 to 160 students taking advantage of the classes this year. We had about 48 enroll in the classes last year," said Amy Williams, Dual Enrollment Coordinator.

Governor Steve Bullock said these dual enrollment programs offer many benefits.

"By getting those college credits while they're in high school will help students earn a degree faster," said Bullock. "It's also really exposing high school students to the opportunity to really enter into the college environment with credits."

He said the key to a successful economy is education and having these classes allow students to get a head start on their careers.

"We're looking at everything from early learning before kids enter grade school to what's happening with career and technical to two and four year colleges," said Bullock.

The Governor also stopped by Polson High School on Thursday afternoon to talk about the Graduation Matters Montana, a program that encourages the community to help increase the number of students who graduate and prepare them for college or careers.

KHQ.COM - Mid August is about the time that we start to see spiders come into our homes, particularly the hobo spider. August and September is mating season for the hobo and that means you may be seeing more funnel-like webs in and around your home. Males are on a mission to find a female which is why they are a lot more active at this time.
