Missoula Designer's Clothing Line Hits Store Shelves

A Missoula entrepreneur is making a big move for his clothing business, as he gets ready for it to hit the shelves of Bob Ward's this month.

Since he was just a kid, Missoula business owner, Owen Lorenzo Cripe, knew he wanted to design clothes.

"I knew going back to as early as junior high that I wanted to sometime, create my own clothing company," Cripe said.

He turned his passion into success about four years ago, when he started Hurrocane clothing. Cripe previously started a clothing line in Northern California, but he felt Missoula would be the best place to fuel his creativity.

"I think Missoula is a Mecca for creative and inspired people, I don't know if it's in the water," Cripe said.

Hurrocane clothing currently sells hats, T-shirts, tank tops and hoodies at events across the country and online, but this fall the company is taking a big steps when its line, "Snow 365" hits the shelves of Bob Ward's.

"It feels pretty awesome. It's a big step for us as far as the growth of the company," Cripe said.

Cripe grew up in Montana, and spent parts of his life living in California, but now has kids and thought Missoula would be the perfect place for his family to live as he builds his business.

"Missoula's a great little city, the college brings a great influx of fresh blood and people each season," he said.

Cripe currently works out of his apartment, with just a small team of people. He hand draws all of his design concepts, before they are transferred to a digital format by a graphic artist. The designs are then printed and sewn on to clothing by a shop in Billings.

"Everyday you're going to have your difficulties, you're humps in the road, but I mean just keep doing it, just keep going, live your life through your Hurrocane and you'd be amazed," Cripe said.

He is working to expand the types of clothing he's selling, and hopes to take the brand world wide.

"We still got a lot of work ahead of us. We're not even close to the mountain top, but everyday were taken steps," Cripe added.

The line "Snow 365" is coming to Missoula and Bozeman Bob Ward's stores this month.
