Adopt a Cop Program in Butte's Schools

Posted: Updated:
BUTTE -

The Butte-Silver Bow County Law Enforcement Department is making sure they have a presence in Butte district schools, as students return to class Tuesday.

County police and public schools came together to create the "Adopt a Cop" program, paring officers with schools.

The officers check in periodically with principals and staff to see if anything is needed.

They also learn the layout of the schools in the case of an emergency.

Students in turn learn to be comfortable with the police.

"I think it works well for both the schools and law enforcement," said Undersheriff George Skuletich. "One thing it does for our law enforcement is it gets our officers educated in what the schools are like, what doors to enter in case the is an emergency on where the classrooms are and where the hallways are and stuff like that."

The "Adopt a Cop" program will go last through this school year, and law enforcement say they expect it to continue for many more years.
