Flathead Lake Is Alive With The Sound Of Music

BIGFORK -

In its fourth year, the Crown Guitar Festival is bringing in big names, and big bucks, to Bigfork.

Flathead lake is trading tunes for the week.

Bigfork's Crown Guitar Festival has been strumming since Monday with workshops, concerts, and the chance for musicians from across the continent to connect, just like the Trifield Guitar Project.

"It's really a blessing; it's a privilege to be here because we get to share our original project and we get to draw all this creative energy from these well established guitarists," said Karl Marino, a member of the Trifield Guitar Project.

Rami Halperin, Alex Sill, and Karl Marino met at the festival's competition last year, each winning their respective categories. The guys were asked back this year to perform some original music that they just released on Tuesday.

"The funny thing is we spend a lot of time on Skype and when I got off the airport at LAX and saw Alex, we were talking like if we were friends, like we see each other every week," said Marino.

The competition is on hiatus this year, but nearly two hundred faculty members, staff, and participants are involved in the workshops and every nightly concert this week, a 900-person venue, has sold out. An economic analysis funded by Northwest Energy estimates the guitar festival has pumped about three million dollars into the local economy, but the event's cofounder and chairman, David Feffer, thinks this is pretty conservative.

"If you add this year on top of that you know we're probably six plus million dollars that since 2010 we've contributed to the local economy," said Feffer.

Feffer says that several artists have bought homes in the valley as well as art and jewelry--big ticket items that were not accounted for in the study. For artists like the Trifield Guitar Project, however, this week is all about creating, and learning from, a community.

"He's kind of a classical guy mainly, I'm like a jazz guy, Rami does rock and blues, acoustic or whatever, but the stuff that's on this album ...I mostly think the genre isn't very important. I don't really know what it is," said Sill with a chuckle.

The guitar festival will continue up through this Saturday.
