Bounce Back Year for Griz Volleyball?

Posted: Updated:

The Griz volleyball team finished last in the Big Sky Conference a year ago, in this years pre-season poll they were picked to finish in that same spot, but Montana disagrees.

"Those polls every year where you're picked high or picked wherever you still have to prove it on the court.  We still have a little burr in our saddle, we have some unfinished business, we have a veteran group, and we know are a lot better than that poll says," said Griz Head Coach Jerry Wagner.

The Griz do return the core of their team from last year including five players who have started together since they were freshman.  Couple that with Montana not losing any starters and you have a pretty veteran club.

"To have us five together who started as freshman together, it feels good to have all of us back and I think our goals are the same but even bigger this year," said Senior Brooke Bray.

But to achieve those goals Montana with have to get better on the road.  Last year they were 1-11 away from Missoula but players say they enjoy the challenge.

"I like traveling and going on the road because especially in the preseason we are trying to figure out what we need to improve on and what we need to get better at and it's nice to see those things on the road and not comfortable in your own home," said Bray.

As the season approaches Coach Wagner isn't shy about bringing up the poll again as motivation for his players and believes at the end of the year they may be on the other end of that poll.

"I think it's great we don't have to look behind us to see what's going, we're going to look in front of us and there they are and that's the next hurdle and we will matriculate right to where we need to be.  There's no question in my mind that this team can be Big Sky Conference champions if they want to be," said Wagner.

Montana starts their season Friday at the Virginia Tournament against James Madison.
