UM Students Help Raise Money For Child Abuse Prevention

MISSOULA -

With the help of college students, a local business is raising money to prevent child abuse and neglect.

Many students use the Donation Warehouse here in town as a place to buy used furniture and appliances. What they may not realize is by spending money there, they may be helping what warehouse officials call a growing problem.

With the start of the new school year, college students are back in town, and many are on the lookout for furniture and appliances that fall within their student budget.

"They inevitably need basically everything for their house, so couches, dressers, washers and dryers, so we basically get a huge influx of college students," said Donation Warehouse Co-owner Laci Rathbun.

The Donation Warehouse was born from a garage sale-craigslist idea to help college students find what they are looking for.

"We started picking up items in my dad's garage, and we started selling them on craigslist as a fundraiser," Rathbun said.

The business pick's-up, cleans and repairs donated items to sell. It takes a range of donations from furniture to working appliances, and even parts of appliances. All of the money made at the Donation Warehouse goes to the Parenting Place here in Missoula.

"Every child deserves to have a safe and happy childhood," said Parent Place Executive Director, Teresa Nygaard.

The group is dedicated to preventing child abuse, an issue Nygaard said became a growing problem when the economy took a downturn.

"Parents are stressed by financial issues, with stressed parents you have issues that result from that," Nygaard said.

The warehouse raised about $7,000 this month alone from the surge of college students. With their success, they are encouraging people to send in donations to bring their inventory back up.

"They kind of clean us out, which is great, but our inventory is a little thin, so hopefully we can get some donations this month and keep that momentum going."

To find out how your interested in making a donation to the store head to our the Donation Warehouse website. For more information on child abuse prevention go to the Parenting Place.
