Addition Puts Garden Back In Kindergarten

KALISPELL -

With grant support, students at Edgerton Elementary in Kalispell will soon be able to grow greens in a new garden.

The planned 20'x40' plot will be behind the elementary school, to the right of the goal post.

The principal of Edgerton Elementary, Merisa Murray, says she and her staff have been working on the grant proposal since spring, and they hope to officially open the garden only a week after breaking ground.

Murray explains the garden will be used as a learning tool, teaching basic horticulture to the almost six-hundred students at the school.

Although the land won't sustain the entire school alone, Murray admits that the garden will likely provide some healthy treats throughout the coming school year.

"With Americorp VISTA, through Flathead Valley Community College, they helped us write a grant to receive $2,000 through a whole foods corporation, and so with the partnership with them we will be breaking ground on September 15 to be adding a garden to our grounds," said Murray.

The garden is not only for the students, though. Parents and neighbors are encouraged to enjoy, and help maintain, the community garden.
