City, Tetra Tech Inform Residents About Chemicals In Their Homes

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

Bozeman city officials and the Department of Environmental Quality talked to Bridger Creek residents about the next steps after high levels of volatile organic compounds were found in their homes.

A little more than a month ago high levels of volatile organic compounds were found in 25 homes in the third phase of the Bridger Creek subdivision.

About a hundred homeowners from all three phases of the subdivision were at the meeting to learn more about what exactly is going on.

Kirk Miller with Tetra Tech said their focus has been on phase three, but is starting to expand testing into phase two.

"We don't think there has been soil gas migration in phase 2, but we are going to do some testing to confirm that," said Miller.

Anywhere from three to eleven different chemicals were found in homes in the third phase of the subdivision.

In fact, Miller said four homes had high enough levels of contamination they are automatically receiving mitigation systems to bring those levels down.

They will be installed next month.

But some of the more common chemicals showing up in tests in the homes aren't only found in the closed landfill, but also household chemicals.

Tetra Tech said the city is acting as if all the chemicals found are from the landfill.

"The city has made due, and we are going to proceed that these chemicals found in your home come from the landfill until we have data to prove otherwise," said Miller.

Bozeman Mayor Sean Becker told homeowners this is city hall's top priority.

"We have dedicated our staff to focus solely on this issue so we can get this resolved immediately and get the air quality in your home, if they are affected, back to normal, what you would expect," said Becker.

The city is paying for all testing and mitigation systems.

While V.O.C.'s can pose a risk to human and animal health, scientists from the Department of Environmental Quality say the chances of getting cancer them is very slim and would require years of exposure.

The city will do another sampling of the homes in the winter.
