Woodman School Survives Fire, Students to Return

Posted: Updated:
LOLO CREEK -

Montana fire seasons often coincide with the start of a new school year, but for 43 students living in Lolo Creek, their first day next week will have special meaning.

Woodman School is located nine miles west of Lolo, near the early burn of the Lolo Creek Complex fire.

The six teachers who run the small, K-8 school said the fire crept to the northern edge of the grounds, just 50 yards from buildings.

Woodman teachers said all but two students had to evacuate with their families last week, but none lost their homes.

"The kids are safe, what else can you say, the school… I'm glad the school is here, but this community and this school is more than buildings," said Louise Rhodes, a Woodman teacher.

Woodman School was built in 1892, and burned down once in 1902.

Teachers said they've learned a lot this fire season, and plan to replace the shingle roof with metal and a solid fire evacuation plan.
