Meeting To Address Volatile Organic Compounds Found In Homes

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

On Tuesday night, Bozeman City Commissioners, city staff and the Department of Environmental Quality will be meeting with residents living in the third phase of the Bridger Creek subdivision to discuss the next steps after high levels of volatile organic compounds were found in their homes.

Phil Rosted was one of the many residents in the Bridger Creek Subdivision phase three that has his home tested for volatile organic compounds.

He said with some of the compounds coming back positive, he is worried about selling his home in the future.

"They said they weren't going to buy us a new house, but they were going to mitigate to make the house safe," said Rosted. "In the future, we'll probably sell the house and we would like to be able to sell it at market value."

Several residents ABC/FOX spoke with are also concerned about the health affects the compounds will have on them and their children.

Scientist for the Department of Environmental Quality, Aimee Reynolds said the health effects of VOC's really depend on the compound.

"There are certain compounds like benzene that are potentially cancer causing. They might cause cancer in some folks at really low levels," said Reynolds. "Other compounds where it would take a lot more of the compound before there would be any risk."

Reynolds said there is a one in a million risk of getting cancer.

"We're talking about a lifetime cancer risk like being exposed to the compounds for 30 years," said Reynolds.

Still, the majority of the residents ABC/FOX spoke with say they want to know the next steps the city is going to take in assuring them their homes are safe for their health and their pocketbooks.

The meeting will take place at six p.m. at the Bozeman Holiday on Baxter Lane.
